The Benefits of Martial Arts

The martial arts, and in particular wrestling, are not just physical combat between two people. They are a means of physical, mental and spiritual betterment.

Physical

Wrestling was encouraged by the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace). He once spurred on his grandson, Hasan, during a wrestling match, while the angel Gabriel was spurring on Husayn.

Mental

Facing an opponent and competing in a controlled manner is the epitome of inner and outer strength. It is a way to control the physical body, the emotions, the mind and the ego.

Spiritual

The Companions would regularly wrestle inside the sacred space of the Prophet’s Mosque (Allah bless him and grant him peace) after their congregational prayers. This indicates the spiritual discipline the martial arts instill.

Emotional

‘The strong person is not the one who can wrestle his opponent down. Rather, the strong person is the one who can control himself when he is angry.’ — The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace)

Skill. Experience. Trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, there are no prerequisites for joining the club.

If it’s been a while since you’ve exercised or you have health issues or concerns, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

Students will need to be wearing the appropriate clothing: a Gi and rash guards (top and bottoms).

Below are some links from which you can purchase a Gi and rash guards. For Gi’s, use the size charts provided by the link to find your size.

Gi’s

Gi’s vary in cost, depending on brand, quality, and workmanship. You can expect to pay between £50 to £60 for a basic Gi, with higher quality ones often costing more. The following are some recommendations:

Please note: some Gi’s are sold without a white belt. If so, please ensure you purchase a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt separately. BJJ belts have an area of black cloth (called a ‘bar’), approx 7 cm long, rectangle in shape, that wraps around one end of the belt.

Rash guards

When joining 5 Pillars Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) club students can expect an improvement in their overall fitness in addition to a familiarisation with the core movements of BJJ.

BJJ is arguably one of the most effective self defence systems developed in recent times. It is practical. It provides excellent strength, agility, and other health benefits. And, like all true arts, it trains one to defeat the ego before trying to defeat the opponent.
